Ok we have all seen them…the over the top cakes that cost $2000 and more. If you’re smart, you can cut those costs from 30% to 50% very easily. Follow this advice and you will be on your way to cake heaven and still have money in your wallet left over for the real treat…your honeymoon.
1. One of the most cost effective and easiest things to do is have your baker make a plain wedding cake and decorate it yourself with silk or fresh flowers. You can add ribbons or diamond mesh around the edges for that extra boost. There really is no limit to what you can add or do yourself. You can even have the baker add them for you for a much smaller fee.
2. So you’re not a traditional girl and still want that wow factor? You can certainly still have it. It only requires a bit of trickery that most all good bakers can accommodate. You can make the upper layers out of enough cake to feed the number of guests invited and the lower larger tiers out of styrofoam and made to match. The naked eye will never know and neither will your guests. Just make sure you have enough cake on top to eat and you will be set.
3. Order two different cakes for your special day. A smaller and fancier cake you can use to display on your cake table and for those magical cutting photos. But in the kitchen, you can have a simple sheet cake ready for cutting and serving to your guests. They will never know the difference.
Remember, as much as the wedding cake serves as center stage…it is just going to be eaten. No one will ever see it again. Be smart and save money where you can.
